Branding

AgeWell New York, the New York health-plan provider for older adults, requested that Jak redesign its brand image and develop a consistent brand message. Seeking a new modern creative look for their various businesses, AgeWell preferred to shy away from images of elderly people. 

Jak created “Mac,” a brand ambassador to help connect with the audience and communicate the different services AgeWell offers. An apple of many talents, his primary mission is to gain the attention of his target demographic of New Yorkers who are in need of a health plan provider. He offers a welcoming smile with a friendly wave that captivates onlookers wherever he goes. 

The AgeWell Apple was developed into several illustrations that support the brand message and image. In addition, Jak helped expand AgeWell’s brand within their collateral needs including print and digital marketing materials and presentations.

Jak’s solution was to pair a custom modern typeface with a simplified version of their existing leaf and to brighten their color palette to symbolize growth.

His new company required a contemporary mark which would convey the strength and expertise of an established firm. In creating a timeless logotype, Jak paired historic colors with a custom ampersand and a modern treatment of a classic typeface.

Their philosophy that fitness is a balance between mind and body empowers people to better tackle life’s challenges. The logotype depicts the harmony between their philosophy and practice. As part of their brand, Jak created an exercising mascot that is incorporated into the studio’s signage and marketing materials.

Branding

Elliott Lauren, a women’s clothing company that addresses the needs of a trendy-driven customer who also values quality and fit, was looking to redesign and modernize their logo to project a more contemporary image.

Jak’s solution was to simplify the E and L to create a mark evoking a woven textile. The subtle use of two greys creates a neutral background that allows the clothes to speak for themselves. Once the logomark was finalized, hang tags and apparel labels were developed as an extension of the modernized identity.

Jak snuck a whimsical mascot into the lettering as the counter of the “A,” and by unexpectedly inverting the word “duck,” added another playful twist to the logo.

STRATEGIC REPORT
The Disability Opportunity Fund (DOF), a nonprofit Community Development Financial Institution, provides financing, technical services, and policy advocacy for people with disabilities throughout the United States. As part of their 10th anniversary celebration, they embarked on a 5-year Strategic Plan to be used for fundraising efforts over the next few years. Jak incorporated the angle of the open door on the cover and section pages to reinforce the DOF brand. The flexibility of the grid enabled each spread to include a success story, a quote, along with a substantial amount of copy.

PERFORMING ARTS FESTIVAL CONCEPT
The City Parks Foundation approached Jakdesign to establish a new visual identity for their SummerStage Programs. The mandate was to incorporate the leaf shape from the Foundation’s logo, bright colors, and the names of New York’s five boroughs. Jak created a fluid design system combining various activities and imagery to form the iconic leaf. The flexible graphic style easily translates into ads, brochures, posters, and banners.

CENTENNIAL PUBLICATION
Preparing to celebrate its centennial anniversary, New York School of Interior Design sought to create a book celebrating both the school’s rich history and current, strong foundation. To provide a sense of depth and longevity, Jak visually contrasted the two sections by presenting the historical segment on a warm tone with black and white photographs and the modern segment on white with color imagery. A signature-red frame element is incorporated throughout to provide “snapshots” of the school’s important moments of impact.

DEBT CAPITAL MARKETS BROCHURE AND FOLDER
As a new division of Cantor Fitzgerald, Debt Capital Markets needed to integrate with Cantor Fitzgerald’s existing identity but still have its own distinct brand image. This brochure aimed at existing and new potential clients is a fresh take on a conservative look. The uncluttered design features dynamic full-spread images to counterbalance the wealth of information in the cleanly formatted text pages. The folder was made more modern by pairing a reserved pin stripe on the outside with a bold photo on the inside that evokes strategy. The concept was also translated into an eye-catching trade show booth.

COURSE CATALOG
Jak has been working with the International Center of Photography for the past 33 years designing their educational materials including program catalogs, event collateral, special programs brochures, signage, and advertising. Over the past ten years, we have redesigned the structure of the ICP’s quarterly programs guide twice, reorganizing the content, and changing the format to limit the number of press-sheets. Both times the cost savings for printing were so significant that the redesign paid for itself with the first few issues.

Alcoa pioneered the aluminum industry nearly 130 years ago and continues to innovate with new technologies and processes. Working closely with Alcoa’s team, Jak has been designing their Annual Reports for the last seven years.

A Stronger Foundation
In the past two years that Alcoa Corporation has operated as an independent, publicly-traded company, it has consistently emphasized the importance of solidifying the Company’s foundation to ensure a long and bright future. To reinforce this idea, Jak created a visual foundation for the publication by anchoring the majority of imagery and important statistics along the bottom third of the pages.

Alcoa’s 2014 annual report focuses on a theme of transformation by “advancing our world with innovative solutions.” Jak applied the concept directly to the typography on the cover, which exhibits the company’s four specific markets. The use of a spot gloss varnish over all photos adds a sheen that highlights the bold imagery, reinforcing Alcoa’s progressive approach to the solutions in their industry.

The Alcoa Foundation invests where Alcoa has a presence, partnering with communities to address local needs in a sustainable manner.

A Responsible and Trusted Neighbor
For their 2018 Annual Report the Alcoa Foundation continued their mission of supporting and strengthening communities globally as a “responsible and trusted neighbor.” The foundation’s initiatives are highlighted through large dynamic photography and graphic illustrations that promote an awareness of community.

A New Beginning
With the separation of Alcoa Inc. into Alcoa Corporation and Arconic Inc. at the end of 2016, two new Foundations were formed to support each company. With sustainability being an integral part of Alcoa’s culture, the Alcoa Foundation decided to focus on furthering this mission by supporting programs that create sustainable value for the communities where Alcoa operates. Jak combined illustration with photography to communicate sustainability and “A New Beginning,” the tagline for the report.

Strategic communications firm Gargiulo + Partners teamed up with Jakdesign to create a powerful Annual Review for Highbridge Capital Management, a leading alternative investment management firm.

To differentiate Highbridge, Jak collaborated with photographer Michael Edwards to shoot for dramatic impact, such as selective focus on individuals and ample open space for texts and design elements. By generating the right imagery, Jak created a modern piece with timeless appeal, which established the firm’s signature style.

Material Momentum
Arconic, a company specializing in lightweight metals engineering and manufacturing, creates breakthrough products that transform the way we fly, drive, build and power. For their 2017 Annual Report, Arconic chose the theme of Material Momentum, inspiring Jak to incorporate large monochromatic photographs of product details to emphasize their innovative and impressive designs.

Annual Reports

Jak was recruited by Villanova’s Communications Department to design the university’s first President’s Report, reflecting the “New Villanova.” Instead of pages filled with typical donor lists, the issues focus on themes such as profiles of Villanovans, ideals and values, relationships, environment, and current issues of our time. For each report, Jak worked closely with the photographer to capture imagery that highlights the subject in a way that engages the viewer.

2013–14
The 2013–14 academic year was filled with achievement for Villanova. They attracted their most academically gifted class of applicants; fifteen Villanovans were Fulbright scholars, and Villanova awarded their highest number of research doctoral degrees. To highlight these and other accomplishments of the Augustinian community throughout the report, Jak incorporated large numerals that not only add visual interest, but draw the readers to the vital stats quickly.

The theme of the 2008–2009 report was creating future leaders. Jak incorporated duotone portraits of the deans of each of Villanova’s five colleges and schools paired with noteworthy quotes to highlight their thoughts about how the university’s educational offerings help prepare the students for the challenges ahead.

The theme for their 2018–19 Donor Report is “Together We Add Life to Years.” The overlapping circular motif throughout the Report, not only adds visual focus to select dynamic images, but implies collaboration of all departments at the Hebrew Home that help older adults live their best life possible.

Everyone loves baseball, including Jakdesign. While we don’t get to work directly with players, we do get to support the team’s foundation whose mission is to improve the lives of children and families across the Washington Capital Region. For the past 12 years, Jak has partnered with the foundation on their annual gala materials.

2019 Homecoming Gala
In order to accommodate more guests, the 2019 Washington Nationals Homecoming Gala was held at The Anthem, a new music venue and event space located on the Waterfront in DC. Jak worked with illustrator Christopher Evans to create a graphic illustration of the exciting new space, which is revealed when the invitation is fully opened.

Jakdesign worked with Gargiulo + Partners, one of our strategic partners, to create a new website for Torreya, a boutique investment bank that focuses on the Life Sciences. Jak integrated candid photography and clear messaging to convey the importance of personal relationships with their clients and within their organization.

The site’s elements were streamlined to center around their transactions, deals, and timely events. Jak worked with Luann Ebert, Torreya’s developer, to create a robust online app that allows the client to easily update the site and manage comprehensive details for each transaction.

As part of Torreya’s rebranding project, Jak was asked to modernize and simplify their presentation template. Specializing in information design for the banking community for 30 years, Jak knows exactly how to interpret, simplify, and organize complex financial data. Working closely with Torreya’s team, Jak executed design solutions that include information hierarchy, clear and concise graphics, and a modern color palette. A substantial bank of reference layouts and a transaction library was created along with thorough guidelines for creating presentations.

Moelis & Company, a financial advisory and investment management firm, needs to present a wealth of material in a clear and effective way to its clients. Jak worked with the bankers to determine the types and hierarchy of information required. Once the audit of content types was completed, Jak selected a rich color palette, created templates for each page type, developed a library of clearly organized graphics, and designed tabbed packaging for an efficient and effective presentation system.

Sagent Advisors, an independent investment bank focused on providing financial advice on mergers & acquisitions, sales, divestitures, and private financing solutions, recruited Jakdesign to help streamline their client presentation process. Jak audited their existing presentations and made recommendations based on the findings. Working with their presentation team, Jak selected typefaces and a color palette that complimented their brand, and created standard layouts, graphics, and final templates which considerably reduced production time and cost.

Diploma

For their centennial anniversary, Brooklyn Law School asked Jak to redesign their diploma, commencement invitations and program. The law school requested a contemporary script that complements the traditional Old English font used for the school’s name. Jak selected Bickham Script with it’s many ligatures to give the diploma an air of sophistication for the celebratory occasion.

Holiday Gift 

Jak has developed a reputation for innovative annual holiday gifts that leverage the studio's versatile name. Pulling of the theme of "AppleJak" required a little help from colleagues and friends, who shared their favorite places in New York City. Jakdesign's resulting guide to the Big Apple was a pocket-sized brochure with 75 "insider favorites" listed by category, as well as a map depicting where to find them.

The response to the uniquely branded utility was so overwhelming, that Jak produced a second version a few years later as "The New Yorker's Guide to New York City" that some of Jak's clients gave to their customers as holiday gifts.
